Booking A Hike

Although we encourage hikers to become members of the CUMhike club, non-members are most welcome as well.

Day hikes are free for members, and a fee of R20 per adult and R10 per scholar is charged for non-members. In some cases a permit or gate fee may apply if the hike is in a private or nature conservation area. For more information, visit our membership page.

Day hikes are scheduled 4 months in advance.
Day hikes can be booked a month prior to commencement and may be rescheduled or cancelled if necessary.

Overnight hikes are planned and scheduled a whole calendar year in advance, and this schedule becomes available at the beginning of November. Bookings can be made at any stage, however it is advisable to book as far in advance as possible, in order to secure one's place.

Changes to the hike schedule are formally communicated via the monthly newsletter, however the most readily available and up to date schedule is published on this website.

Please take the time to read through the mountain conduct and the hiking advice pages. Some of our hike leaders have been hiking for more than 20 years, and their advice and suggestions will enhance the overall hiking experience and will promote safety and respect for the environment.

  1. Use the hike schedule or newsletter to choose which hike you would like to join.

  2. Contact the appropriate hike leader via telephone (please phone ONLY between 18:00 - 21:00) or email.

  3. The hike leader will advise of any particulars such as the meeting place on the morning of the hike, or any park fees or permits that may be applicable. Please note that it is the hike leader's duty to fully advise on the difficulty grading of a hike, and may thus be required to make suitable recommendations, if the club member is not fit enough or experienced enough for a particular hike, such as a hike with above usual exposure to heights or excessive distances and altitude gains.

  4. Join the hike at the agreed time and meeting place, and sign the mandatory indemnity form.
